Dr. Alasdair C. Whyte is from the island of Mull. He was brought up within a family of musicians and singers and has been singing in Gaelic since he was a young boy. In 2006, aged 19, he was awarded the An Comunn Gàidhealach Gold Medal for solo singing at the National Mòd, Scotland’s premier Gaelic festival. He now regularly adjudicates at provincial and national Mòds.

In 2012, Alasdair released his first solo album, ‘Las’. The album features self-penned Gaelic songs and new arrangements of traditional songs. A similar balance of original and traditional Gaelic songs can be heard on the two albums released by Alasdair’s current band, WHYTE, in 2016 and 2019.

In 2017, Alasdair was awarded a Ph.D. in Celtic and Gaelic by the University of Glasgow, where he is currently a research affiliate and part-time lecturer. His primary research interests include place-names, linguistics, dialectology, history, literature and song.

Alasdair is a retired insurance professional. He is a past president of the Insurance & Actuarial Society of Glasgow and represents Scotland on the UK council of the Chartered Insurance Institute. He is a long time member of the Glasgow Gaelic Musical Association. Alasdair was born in Glasgow of Lewis parents.

Kenna, who is from Skye, is a retired Head Teacher and a well known Gaelic singer. She teaches Gaelic song on the Traditional Music BA course at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and is on the Board of Directors of Pròiseact nan Ealan, the National Gaelic Arts Agency

Chaidh i tro fhoghlam tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig anns a’ bhaile agus ’s e pìobaire agus seinneadair a tha innte. Tha i air a bhith an sàs ann an obair na meadhanan Gàidhlig fad iomadh bliadhna agus choisinn i PhD aig Sabhal Mòr Ostaig a’ rannsachadh na meadhanan Gàidhlig agus poileasaidh cànain. Tha i an-dràsta ag obair airson a’ BhBC agus, am measg rudan eile, tha i na preaseantair air a’ phrògram ‘Crunluath’ airson Radio na Gàidheal.

Catriona works at the BBC and is a Radio nan Gàidheal presenter for ‘Crunluath’. Having gone through Gaelic medium education in Glasgow Catriona is also a piper and singer. She recently completed a PhD at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig in Gaelic Media Research & Language Policy.

Catrìona MacPhee was born and brought up in Glasgow by South Uist parents, and has worked in Gaelic media for almost 20 years. She is involved in programmes for television and radio on many different subjects. As well as her work with An Lòchran, Catriona is also on the Board of MG Alba.
