  Bha fìor dheagh fheasgar againn Disathairne, an 11mh latha dhen Dàmhair, ’s buidheann de luchd-tòiseachadh is luchd-ionnsachaidh na Gàidhlig a’ tighinn còmhla aig An Lòchran airson an cànan a thogail còmhla. Seo geàrr-chunntas air na rinn sinn.

  Thòisich sinn le bhith a’ cur an aithne a chèile aig na bùird againn, ’s triùir no ceathrar nan suidhe aig gach bòrd. Às dèidh sin, chluich sinn geama sa Ghàidhlig mu chur-seachdan, ’s mi a’ cleachdadh na sgilean-cluiche…er…teagmhach agam 😁 Thug sinn sùil còmhla air seantans no dhà cuideachd far an robh gach gnìomh sgrìobhte sìos, m.e.

  Às dèidh dhuinn fàs “blàth” leis a’ gheama seo, chleachd sinn a’ cheist Dè na cur-seachadan a th’ agad? Innis dhuinn mu dheidhinn fear no dhà dhiubh! airson beagan cabadaich a thòiseachadh nar buidhnean. Bha a h-uile duine a’ dèanamh an dìcheall airson a’ cheist a fhreagairt, ’s iad a’ cleachdadh abairtean leithid Duilich? no Ciamar a chanas tu…? ma bha duilgheadasan ann.

  Ghabh sinn fois an uair sin, far an robh mise a’ gabhail òrduighean tì is cofaidh (ach ann an Gàidhlig a-mhàin). Thill sinn an uair sin airson pàirt a dhà dhen fheasgar, ’s sinn ag èisteachd ri ceithir faidhlichean-fuaime goirid aig ìrean A1, A2, B1 agus B2. ’S ann gun do dh’èist sinn ri gach pìos dà thuras an toiseach; an uair sin, nochd an teasca air an sgrìon ach le beàrnan ann; agus mu dheireadh thall, sheall mi an teacsa air fad. Thug seo an cothrom dha na com-pàirtichean a bhith a’ tuigsinn mean air mhean na bha iad a’ cluinntinn, an àite a bhith a’ leughadh a h-uile càil sa bhad.   Chuir sinn crìoch air an fheasgar le bhith a’ cleachdadh cheistean-còmhraidh eile: An toil leat leughadh? Dè tha thu a’ leughadh an-dràsta? Dè an leabhar as fheàrr leat? Thug seo cothrom a bharrachd dhan a h-uile duine an cuid Gàidhlig labhairteach a chur gu feum. Às dèidh a’ ghlanaidh agus an sgioblachaidh, chaidh sianar nar measg an ath-dhoras dhan Lismore airson an còmhradh dà-chànanach a chumail a’ dol.

  We had a great afternoon on Saturday 11th October, with a group of Gaelic beginners and learners getting together at An Lòchran to learn the language together. Here’s a summary of what we got up to.

  We started off by introducing ourselves on our respective tables, with three or four people to each table. After that, we played a game in Gaelic about hobbies, with me putting my…er…dubious acting skills to use 😁 We also looked at some sentences where each action was written down, e.g.

 

ball-coise (football): Cha toil leam ball-coise idir! ’S fheàrr leam hocaidh-deighe.

sreap (climbing): Climbing is okay, but it’s dangerous as well. (the guests had to put this one into Gaelic themselves)

 

  After warming up with this game, we used the question Dè na cur-seachadan a th’ agad? Innis dhuinn mu dheidhinn fear no dhà dhiubh! (“What hobbies do you have? Tell us about one or two of them!”) in order to kick-start some conversation within our groups. Everyone did their best to answer the question, using expressions such as Duilich? (“Sorry?”) or Ciamar a chanas tu…? (“How do you say…?”) if they ran into difficulty.

  We took a break then, with me taking orders for tea and coffee (but in Gaelic only). We returned for part two of the afternoon, and started by listening to four short audio files at A1, A2, B1 and B2 levels. Firstly we listened to each piece twice; then, the text appeared on the screen, but with gaps in it; and finally, the whole text appeared on the screen. This gave the participants the chance to piece together what they were hearing gradually, instead of reading the whole lot immediately. This is a three-stage learning method that is effective, and that can be put to use on websites such as e.g. learngaelic.scot as well (1. listen, 2. Gaelic text, 3. English text).

  We brought the afternoon to a close by using another conversation starter: An toil leat leughadh? Dè tha thu a’ leughadh an-dràsta? Dè an leabhar as fheàrr leat? (“Do you like reading? What are you reading currently? What’s your favourite book?”) This gave everyone another opportunity to practice their spoken Gaelic. After tidying and cleaning up, six of us went next door to the Lismore to keep the bilingual conversation going.
